Conceptual fashion and accessory designer Jo Cope showed three amazing pieces from her past and current collections in Wednesday’s OFW Concept show in the stunning setting of the Randolph Hotel, Oxford.

Cope’s three striking block colour outfits included the finale garment; a dress which made the body appear to be vacuum packed inside a large purple square! This formed an apt and climactic ending to an exciting show.

Jo Cope is one of the hottest up-and-coming conceptual designers in the country. She has worked with Topshop Oxford Street to create window installations, the Design Festival, B Store concept boutique for Frieze Arts fair and retails her conceptual accessories in concept shops in the UK and internationally.

Jo said: “I was very proud to be part of Oxford Fashion Week. It is a highly professional environment which champions all aspects of fashion, including the conceptual. It is a refreshing alternative to see such amazing presentations of fashion outside of London.”

Cope’s work is visual and intelligent with trademark primary colours and clean but visually stimulating aesthetics.

Cope’s futurist presentations of fashion are driven by the desire to make people ‘see fashion and accessories in a completely new and less ordinary way’ and her work is at the heart of progressive conceptual fashion.

Cope’s finale piece was on the front page of today’s Oxford Times.

The OFW Forum in association with the Oxford Union on May 3rd, 2010 provided a fascinating insight into the mysterious world of fashion.

The OFW Forum on May 3rd, 2010 provided a fascinating insight into the mysterious world of fashion. The panel of Dolly Jones (Editor of Vogue.com), Frances Card (Managing Director of Frances Card Consultancy), Tony McGee (Photographer), Claire Wilcox (Curator of Fashion & Textiles at the Victoria & Albert Museum) and David Gandy (the UK’s top male model) were well-chosen as they provided a real mixture of experiences and opinions.

The panellists all gave a short talk on their ‘Fashionable Lives’, ranging from Frances Card’s experience as a back-room assistant, to Tony McGee’s decision to make it as a photographer aged 14, to Claire Wilcox’s career indecision, to Dolly Jones’ work experience at Vogue and to David Gandy’s friends entering him secretly into a GMTV modelling competition.

The Q & A session that followed showcased the interest of the audience in finding out more about the fashion world. The panellists were impressed with the breadth and depth of questions from students eager to follow in their footsteps.

The Forum’s organisers, Lindsey Meyers and Alyx Barker, pulled off an interesting, insightful and well-structured event that left the audience inspired and privileged.

The Oxford Union provided a splendid venue for the talk and the pre-drinks. Many thanks to Union Secretary Zara McGlone, who was an admirable host. Our heartfelt thanks must also go to all the speakers, who took some valuable time out of their incredibly busy lives to inspire, educate and entertain the people of Oxford.

Oxford Fashion Week 2010 kicked off in style on Saturday 1st May with the Oxford Style Show. The spectacular Oxford Town Hall played host to designers, models, stallholders, press and over 500 attendees.

The show’s producers, Rosie Pigott, Kirstie Scott and their dedicated team executed 9 catwalk shows, featuring the best of high street, independent and student fashion. With the queue stretching down the stairs, this first time event was hugely popular and attended by a mixture of fashion professionals, families, teens and everything in between.

Generously supported by the Clarendon Centre, the day also featured dozens of stalls around the Town Hall, including a highly popular Dermalogica facial bar. Oxford boutiques including Aspire, Booty and Annabelinda were well represented. Entertainment highlights between the runway shows included a mesmerizing steel drum performance, the melodious sounds of the Oxford Belles, and a crowd-pleasing break-dancing performance on the catwalk, with incredible displays of athleticism and rhythm from five male dancers.

Press and photographers from a wealth of different newspapers, magazines, websites and blogs covered the event. Media outlets including BBC Oxford, The Oxford Mail, Cotswold Life, the Oxford Journal, Fashion Insider, Cherwell and Isis all made appearances, interviewing designers backstage and getting to the heart of the action. International press included Cape Argus newspaper from South Africa and UT-1, the Ukraine’s main televison channel.

Young designers from the London College of Fashion and Oxford’s own Ruskin School were particularly excited to showcase their collections to a large audience, some for the first time. They were also pleased to be interviewed by BBC journalists, who were very impressed by their collections.

The breathtaking London College of Fashion pieces will also be on display at the OFW Closing Party: Argenteus Exhibition on Thursday 6th May, along with the sketches, fabrics and mood boards used by the designers during the creative process. Make sure you get your tickets for this event to see how the London College of Fashion students’ pieces made it from idea to reality, alongside the work of established designers and photographers.

Cauliflower’s colourful collection formed a particularly exciting catwalk show, bringing the party atmosphere to the occasion. Models came out dressed in bin bags to strains of Bach’s ‘Cello Concerto No. 1, before the drumbeats kicked in and they danced their way out of them to the delight of the spectators.

The UK debut of the Sunlight collection by Ukrainian designer Zinaida Likhacheva formed the show’s grand finale. Cherwell’s Fashion Editors pronounced the signature headdresses show-stealing.

After six hours of fashion, complimentary food and drink at Bar Meze was just the ticket, before guests were invited to the official after-party at Kukui to dance the night away with the OFW team and models.

The Style Show had something for everyone, and showed off the creative reach of both Oxford and Oxford Fashion Week. The Style Show was a tremendous performance of runway shows marking a fantastic beginning for the second Oxford Fashion Week!

OFW FORUM FEATURING

** Dolly Jones – Editor, Vogue.com **
Dolly Jones studied History of Art at Manchester University, before arriving at Vogue for three week’s work experience. Next came London’s University of the Arts Periodical Journalism course, during which she was commissioned to interview “someone at the top of their game” – Alexandra Shulman obliged – and she was later invited back to take up a six month internship as editorial assistant of the magazine. The “Writer” job at VOGUE.COM came up in January 2000. A decade later – after breaking news every day, working with the Condé Nast Digital team to develop the site to its fullest potential and being named editor in 2005 – she is now responsible for an awarding-winning website that is the most fashion-forward and regularly updated fashion destination online. In 2008 her role was expanded to Executive Editor of Conde Nast Digital, while remaining editor of VOGUE. COM.

** David Gandy, Supermodel **
Before graduating from University with a Marketing degree, David Gandy’s friends entered him for a modeling competition on ITV’s This Morning. At that moment, his life took a very different direction. He went on to win the competition, sign with Select Models and worked regularly on various campaigns.

In 2006 he was spotted by Dolce and Gabbana and became their muse. Best known as the face of their “Light Blue” fragrance, his iconic shoot the same year saw him transform to fashion Royalty overnight with a 50ft billboard in Times Square, over 11 million internet hits to view his campaign and global recognition.

Three years later, David was voted Britain’s Number 1 male model and third most successful model in the world by Forbes Magazine. He has appeared in numerous campaigns and catwalk shows, opening for D&G in Milan earlier this year, with Naomi Campbell for Fashion For Relief and has worked alongside supermodels including Giselle, Eva Herzigova, and the actress Scarlett Johansson.

He has shot with some of the most sought after global photographers including Mario Testino and Steven Meisel and at 30, already boasts an envious portfolio of editorial work including the cover of VMan, L’Optimum and GQ. Mario Testino said; “David has something of what the 1980s supermodels have. He radiates health and positivity. I think he has what it takes to be very big. It’s exciting because it signifies a real shift in men’s fashion. The male model world is changing.”

Hi agency, Select Model Management has been a major influence in the international fashion scene ever since its conception 30 years ago. The London office boasts an impressive portfolio of the UK’s biggest, brightest and most successful male and female modeling talent and commands calls from an exclusive client list of the world’s leading lifestyle brands. David has renewed his contract with Dolce and Gabbana for 2010 and is currently starring in print ads for their apparel line shot by Steven Klein.

** Tony McGee, Photographer **
TONY MCGEE left school at the age of 14 to pursue his career in photography. By 18 he was shooting his first cover shoot for Harpers and Queen, and by 19 was travelling the world, photographing for publications such as British and American Vogue, Vogue Italia, L’Uomo Vogue, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Sunday Times Magazine, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker magazine.

McGee’s subjects have included actors and actresses such as Daniel Day Lewis, Rod Steiger, Jeremy Irons, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anna Friel, Charlotte Rampling, models such as Jerry Hall, Tara Shannon, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Yasmin Le Bon, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Eva Herzigova, and performers such as David Bowie, Marianne Faithfull, Debbie Harry, George Michael, Tina Turner, Shirley Bassey, Stevie Nicks, Roxy Music, The Sex Pistols and Mother Theresa.
Tony McGee, who took the first professional shots of a 14 year old Kate Moss, has shot campaigns for numerous designer labels, including Chanel, Lancome, L’Oreal, Yardey, Bourjois, Winston Cigarettes and Seiko. Aged 24 McGee directed and filmed his first TV commercial for Boots No. 7 brand, for this he was awarded the Gold prize at Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. He went on to film over 250 TV commercials working with production companies around the world and under his self-titled production company McGee Films.

Although fashion photography is McGee’s prime discipline, his repertoire also includes Fine Art. In 2001 he published his first book ‘Boxing Ballerinas’ followed by the critically acclaimed ‘Room at the Top’ published in 2008.

** Claire Wilcox, V&A Fashion & Textiles Curator **
Claire Wilcox has been at the V&A for most of her working life. Last year she was Acting Head of the Contemporary Programme and has recently moved back to her role as Senior Curator of Fashion. She is known for her exhibitions, in particular Vivienne Westwood (2004) and The Golden Age of Couture (2007). She created Fashion in Motion in 1999, which features fashion shows staged in the museum’s galleries. It is one of the V&A’s most popular live events.

She was educated at Exeter University (where she read English) and Camberwell School of Art, University of London. She has written many books on fashion and regards writing, and communicating, as an essential part of her work.

** Frances Card, Fashion Consultant **
Frances Card is a fashion business expert and MD of the highly successful FCC – Frances Card Consultancy. Frances has an extensive knowledge of the Fashion Industry spanning over two and a half decades. Among many high profile clients she has recently worked with the Bauer Media Group creating, launching and building the designer portfolio for the luxury ecommerce site Cocosa; developing the business at many clients including my-wardrobe.com, where she is a non-executive Director ; she is currently consulting for several clients including the prestigious multi channel retailer Matches Fashion. Frances is highly involved with the Fashion Business Club and, as well writing a weekly blog for the fashion b2b magazine Drapers, is frequently asked to speak at or host industry events.

Frances began her consultancy following several years of developing Scandinavian fashion brands in the UK and Ireland. Prior to this in 2001, as International Brand Director of the iconic London store Liberty, Frances re-launched the Liberty of London brand internationally.

Frances began her career in buying at Dickens and Jones in Regent Street and then moved to the States where she joined a US based luxury label independent. Returning to the UK Frances held senior positions in retailers House of Fraser and Bentalls before channelling her buying and retailing skills into developing several wholesale labels at both Sales Director and MD level.

Dutch company Rx / Ry has been revealed as the latest sponsor of the Malmaison Lingerie Show taking place on Wednesday 5th May at Oxford’s famous converted prison.

“As a bold, young company always looking for fresh new atmospheres, Rx/Ry is delighted to be sponsoring Oxford Fashion Week. Oxford is a unique place, seeped in history, which manages to take the good from tradition and spice it up with creativity, innovation and an eye to the future. A hub for some of the greatest minds, and future innovators and leaders, we’re hoping to be inspired by its people and places, and would be proud to even do a bit of inspiring of our own.

OFW fits this location perfectly, taking the ancient British tradition of fine clothing to a new level, from the fun and the practical, to the artistic and astonishing – and all of this with a sense of proper planning and unspoiled inspiration. We felt particularly connected to the Lingerie-Show, as all the gorgeous lingerie is tasked with the same field of work as Rx/Ry: making the most out of what you got (and feeling irresistible doing so)”

By Leila Siddiqi

With numerous highly acclaimed exhibitions in the fashion capitals of London, New York and Paris under her belt to designing head pieces for the five final contestants of prestigious American TV series “America’s Next Top Model” and developing couture jewellery in the international market, Anoush Waddington’s creations stand to symbolize her unique style which highlight extraordinary design combining proportion, line and colour with precious, unprecious and alternate materials. For Anoush the labour of love has lead to an inspiring and challenging journey which began while modelling and drawing for animation studios in London. Thereon she started her own fashion and accessories business in 1995 under the label Metalix and completed a course in Design, Metal work and jewellery from Bucks New University in 2000 with a fascinating collection called “In Tension” which lead to instant recognition and acclaim from a number of industry insiders, both nationally and abroad. She has developed large scale projects as well as jewellery collections and has several commissions of Public Art Works in the South of England to her credit.

“I had the honour of being awarded again this year at the Goldsmiths Craftsmanship and Design Award Ceremony and more specially so having been able to produce a piece strictly under my ideal principles of creation and production – without any aid of technology but my own skills and craftsmanship. This particular piece is among the pieces which will be shown at the Concept Show.

“I should also like to mention my involvement with the Society of Designer Craftsmen which I take pride of being a Fellow Member of, and where I have been acting as a Mentor and Assessor of New Designers,” Anoush reveals.

And where does Anoush get her inspiration from? “From a life time of observation of surrounding sources, trying to think outside the obvious. That makes each piece a challenge on its own and a step forward in the understanding of fluidity of balance, boldness with subtlety, understanding how these contrasting elements affect the wearer and how I can materialise my perception of those elements into light, texture, form, movement and colour that is pleasing to the eye and flattering to the body,” Anoush admits.
Anoush is looking forward to her work being showcased at the Oxford Fashion Week whereby she will have the opportunity to “engage into the thoughts of new possibilities, new trends and possible collaboration within the fashion industry.”

“People can expect a statement, an impact, an expression of my personality which cannot let go of a certain sense of fun and elegance from my collection. Unusual results in orthodox materials,”Anoush tells.
Not one to tire from her craft, Anoush has big plans for the future. “I’d like to continue researching materials and techniques, producing new collections therefore meeting new challenges, re-establish my international presence and house, and hopefully be able to, once again, support new designers.”

Come and be dazzled with Anoush’s exquisite creations at the Concept Show at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford on 4th May 2010.
